If you’re not a fan of Trump it’s been quite fun watching his base be so angry with him, but at the same time it’s puzzling.

Think of all the actions Trump has taken that will harm “his people”: the Medicaid cuts, hits to farming, the inflation tariffs are likely to bring; there’s broken promises over taking down big tech, reviving the coal industry, Mexico paying for “the wall”… and yet nothing has made his base revolt like a two-page memo released in early July.

Why is this?

Looking into this took me down a political science rabbit hole, looking at the deep structural and psychological links between populism and conspiracy theories. I found it fascinating and I hope you will too.
